Abstract. Recently, an important place in the formation of knowledge about the historical stages and theoretical and methodological foundations of the development of science, as well as on the history and philosophical problems of certain areas of scientific knowledge is occupied by the philosophical problems of the biological sciences. Biology has become one of the leading sciences of the modern world. The main tasks of biology are currently environmental issues, such as nature protection, conservation of the biosphere. Potato growing is one of the most important branches of agriculture. The question of the history of potato growing is interesting and diverse. The history of potato growing is shrouded in legends and was difficult, often curious. It is known that potatoes have been grown for more than 7000 years. There is still no consensus about its origin. The birthplace of potatoes is considered to be South America, where more than 150 of its species grow.The article describes the main stages of the formation of scientific potato growing from the first mention to the present day. The relationship with the development of biological knowledge is noted. The founders of Russian potato growing are named. The directions of development of potato growing at the present time are indicated.
